How is GATE School different
from other English Kindergartens?
GATE School got its name from the abbreviation of ¡°Gifted
and Talented Education.¡± In order for your child to be
accepted to into GATE School, he
or she must follow the three criteria
below.
*
Place within the top 5 percentile on the K-ABC gifted
and talented placement exam (distributed by YBM-Sisa
Children¡¯s Intelligence Development Center)
* Pass the GATE English Proficiency Test
* Must have a Teacher Recommendation Letter that abides
by the rules of GATE School
As you can see from our strict entrance policies, GATE
School is composed of children with intelligent minds
and superior English proficiency. With these children,
we offer intense and diverse programs to help our students
to grow and become Global Leaders that will change the
world.

Differences Between Gifted
Students and High Achieving Students
Bertie Kingore created the following comparison between
bright learners, gifted learners, and creative learners.(Copyright:Kingore,
B.(Spring 2003). High Achiever, Gifted learners, Creative
learners. Understanding Our Gifted.- In Press. Used
with permission.)
These comparisons may be helpful in answering some tough
questions about why a student who achieves all A¡¯s in
his or her schoolwork may not be considered gifted.
GATE School values communication
between parents and teachers. You may express your opinion
or concerns through three communicational methods:
¡á GATE Communications: The GATE Communication notebook
is the easiest way to communicate with your teacher on
a daily basis.
¡á Face-to-face counseling: A special requested meeting
with the foreign teacher about your child¡¯s behavior,
academic progress, or other concerns. You must submit
a Counseling Request Form for this meeting. For a printable
Counseling Request Form, please click here.
¡á Portfolio Counseling: If you would prefer to have a
counseling meeting about your child¡¯s academic performance
spoken not in English but in KOREAN, you may request a
Portfolio Counseling with GATE staff. You must submit
a Counseling Request Form for this meeting. For a printable
Counseling Request Form, please click here.
A. What is the job of
YBM¡¯s Children Development Center?
1.They diagnose children¡¯s cognitive development level
by measuring the child¡¯s ability of self-awareness, emotional
growth, and mental health.
2.Offer individualized intelligence development programs
that are suitable for each child.
3.Offer materials needed to help promote child¡¯s mental
intelligence in the home.
4.Present appropriate upbringing techniques to the parents
of the gifted and talented child.
5.Provide consultations and counseling if needed.
B. What test is used
to measure the intelligence level of my child?
The Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC)
is a clinical instrument, developed by Professors
Alan and Nadeen Kaufman, which is used to assess
the cognitive development of children. It is important
to point out however, that the K-ABC should not be used
as the only source of measuring
a child¡¯s cognitive development. Other tests, such as
the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, will also
be incorporated when testing the child.
C. How do you develop
and grow mental intelligence? When is it a good time
to test my child?
1.Mental development in a child
varies and is flexible. Eighty
percent of a child¡¯s cerebral growth develops
by age 4. By age 6, cerebral growth becomes stable and
by age 10, there is little or no change in the mental
and cerebral growth of the child.
2.After testing of the child¡¯s mental development, 6
months must pass before any reexamining can occur. Other
(different) tests should not be used and is restricted.
Comparing results of these different tests serve no
purpose.
