Accelerated
Reading & Writing :
As one of main language arts programs at GATE, Accelerated
Reading & Writing consists of four approaches for the
gifted child; Fiction, Non-Fiction, Reading Comprehension,
and Workshop. Through each approach GATE young learners get
to be introduced to both written English and spoken English
and acquire accurate English skills.
Fiction provides young learners the chance to read various
Korean Falk Tales, Aesop¡¯s Fables, and chapter books, analyzing
characteristics of characters, |
background, plot , and recreating
their own new story based on the original.
Non-Fiction is to motivate young learners to get more interested
in current issues by reading newspapers / magazines, books of
Science / Social Studies and eventually to make their own publications.
Reading Comprehension focuses on young learners¡¯ solid reading
comprehension skill through content-based and analytic reading.
While Reading Comprehension consists of paper work using textbooks,
Workshop is for more activity-centered work-book report, portfolio,
discussion, or presentation.
As described above, GATE young learners are to be active readers
and creative writers through this total approach of Accelerated
Reading and Writing.

Dynamic Theme English
:
The purpose of Dynamic Theme English is to enlarge GATE
young learners¡¯ concept map in their heads through a variety
of theme-based study. GATE has 6 themes throughout the
school year which belong to either science or social studies.
Under each theme for two months, GATE young learners will
be provided with a combined lesson to enrich vocabulary
skills, expand the range of background knowledge and express
their own opinion after analyzing the phenomenon related
to the theme.
|
|
| For this approach, young
learners will be exposed to a variety of activities to link
what they have learned at school with what is happening in their
real daily lives including in-class activities such as team
project, group discussion/presentation or case study in-depth,
school events and home activities relating to the theme. |
|
 | Theme Presentation
:
As a part of Dynamic Theme English, students will have
to present a visual project related to the theme. By speaking
in front of others, students can build public speaking
skills and self-confidence that empowers them to learn,
serve and lead in many areas for years to come. |

Phonics :
Phonics is such an important part of reading and spelling.
Children will be introduced to phonics rules very important
to learn, and will sound out new words and will be able
to apply phonics in spelling and writing process. Children
will play many games and sing songs to reinforce each
rule and make it fun to learn and recall. |

Library & SRC
:
SRC (Scholastic Reading Counts) is a leveled and measurable
online reading program that consists of two parts. Students
read fiction and non-fiction books based on their interests
and reading level (Lexile) in the library. Later, they
take a computer-generated quiz to test their comprehension.
